SOLAR DO CASTELO - LISBON HERITAGE COLLECTION - ALFAMA, Lisbon – A Smart Stay in the City
About the Hotel
Historic Castle Location
Solar Do Castelo is the only hotel inside the medieval walls of São Jorge Castle, in Lisbon's Alfama district. The 18th-century building stands on the site of the former Royal Palace kitchens. Peacocks from the castle often roam the hotel's courtyard.
Rooms with Castle Views
The 20 rooms feature air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and Molton Brown toiletries. Some rooms have views of the castle. Decor includes red velvets and heavy curtains inspired by the castle's medieval style. Bathrooms have showers or tubs.
Breakfast & Local Eats
Breakfast includes Lisbon's custard tarts, regional cheeses, smoked hams, and fresh fruit. Room service offers light meals like salads, sandwiches, and local cheese platters. The lounge bar serves drinks in a space with original stone walls.
Alfama District Access
The hotel is steps from Santa Luzia Belvedere, with views of Alfama's rooftops and the Tagus River. Nearby are the Sé Cathedral, Feira da Ladra flea market, and Portas do Sol viewpoint. The nearest metro station is a 10-minute walk.
Castle Village Experience
During June's Santo António festival, Alfama's streets fill with music, grilled sardines, and dancing. The hotel provides a computer and printer for guest use. The pedestrian-only castle walls make this location better suited for tourists than business travelers.

Guest Ratings & Reviews
Staying at this hotel was a delightful experience. The rooms were bright, extremely comfortable, and spacious, offering a lovely small balcony to relax. The service was exceptional, with staff going above and beyond to meet all needs. The location, nestled next to the castle in the charming Alfama district, was simply gorgeous. Dining was top-notch with a great selection of food in a beautiful setting. However, guests with limited mobility might find it challenging due to the hotel's location in the narrow streets.
My stay at the hotel was a mix of wonderful and slightly cramped experiences. The rooms were beautifully equipped with individual style and had a spacious bathroom, overlooking the palace grounds, but felt a little cramped for a longer stay, considering the room rate. The noise from the nearby restaurant and bar across the street was noticeable during the day and evening.
Wow, what a charming hotel! The rooms had some unique features such as the window seat overlooking the delightful courtyard with water features and roaming peacocks. They overlooked the castle grounds and were well cared for and thoughtfully decorated and furnished. Spacious by European standards.
I absolutely loved my stay at this hotel! The location was amazing, nestled within the fortified walls of Castelo De S offering stunning 360-degree views of Lisbon. The rooms, though small, were cozy and had everything I needed. The service was top-notch, with attentive and professional staff always ready to assist. The dining experience was delightful, with a diverse selection of local and traditional dishes to choose from. The facilities were well-maintained, making my stay even more enjoyable.
I had a delightful stay at this hotel with lovely rooms featuring a large, bright bathroom and unique features like a window seat overlooking the beautiful courtyard with water features and peacocks. The service was top-notch, with extremely accommodating and professional staff who went above and beyond to assist me. The location within the castle walls offered stunning views of Lisbon, despite requiring some uphill walking. Dining was a delicious experience with a variety of fresh foods, while the facilities were excellent.
The hotel offers friendly and helpful service, fantastic location with unique charm, and delicious dining options. However, the rooms lack soundproofing and space for luggage.
